Page your on-call team from Amazon CloudWatch alarms

Subscribe Webalert to the Amazon SNS topic your alarms notify. When an alarm goes to ALARM, Webalert opens an incident and pages whoever is on call. When it goes back to OK, the incident resolves.

No credit card · on-call for up to 5 responders · CloudWatch alarms in any AWS region, through Amazon SNS.

Set it up in a few minutes

  1. 1

In Webalert, go to Integrations → Add integration → Amazon CloudWatch, pick the escalation policy to page, and save. Copy the HTTPS endpoint and keep it private.

  2. 2

In SNS, open the topic your alarms use (or create one) and add an HTTPS subscription with the endpoint. Webalert confirms it automatically within a minute.

  3. 3

On each alarm, notify the topic both In alarm and OK, so incidents resolve on their own.

AWS CLI

aws sns subscribe \
  --topic-arn arn:aws:sns:<region>:<account-id>:<topic> \
  --protocol https \
  --notification-endpoint '<HTTPS endpoint from Webalert>'

What Webalert does with Amazon CloudWatch alerts

  • Opens an incident when an alarm goes to ALARM and pages the escalation policy.
  • Resolves it when the alarm goes back to OK.
  • Ignores INSUFFICIENT_DATA, and SNS retries of the same message.
  • Checks that every message is signed by Amazon SNS.

Who gets paged comes from your on-call rotation and escalation policy. Each person picks how they’re reached: SMS, phone call, email, push or Slack.

Questions

Which plans include the Amazon CloudWatch integration?
Starter includes 3 inbound integrations and Business includes unlimited. Phone and SMS paging is the on-call add-on at €12 per responder a month, and every trial includes it for up to 5 responders.
Does it page by phone?
Yes. Each person sets how they’re paged, for example SMS right away and a call after 2 minutes. Press 1 on the call or reply 1 to the SMS to acknowledge and stop the escalation.
What if nobody answers?
The escalation policy moves to the next level: the secondary, then the team lead, as many levels as you set. A page that can’t reach anyone escalates straight away.
Can I try it before paying?
Yes. Every new account gets a 14-day trial with on-call for up to 5 responders, no credit card.
